COSMIC BLOG - Cynthia VS Pegasus (Pokemon VS Yu-Gi-Oh)

"God cannot alter the past, though historians can" - (Samuel Butler).

Connections:

Two stylish, flamboyant monster summoners with fascinations with history. However while Cynthia wants to study and preserve it, Pegasus wants to exploit it for his own nefarious purposes. Their pursuit of history put them in the paths of three ancient deities, The Egyptian Gods and The Creation Trio, that they also had a hand in sealing, Pegasus sealed them away in the cards and hid them so they couldn’t be used while Cynthia assisted the player in stopping and catching them. They served as their games/arc final challenge of a championship, The Pokemon League and Duelist Kingdom, that granted the victor the title of champion and helped the hero throughout their adventures.

Cynthia, Pokemon Champion of the Sinnoh Region

Pegasus, The Founder and Creator of Duel Monsters

History hides many secrets. Many ancient stories that have been researched and known about for decades. But there's also points in history that have never been seen, and never will. Infact, only about 2% of Human History has been fully recorded. Makes you wonder, what have we forgotten? And would want to remember it?

Both these ultimate challenges with their series aimed to discover and study the secrets. For one, a place of wonder and genuine fascination. The other? A way to separate himself from the tragedy that has eaten away at his life. A Battle of Good and Evil, as History often recalls. But which of these two will become lost history?

Before We Start…

Both Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh have long histories with lots of Media. So it could be confusing what to and what not to use. Stuff like Pokemon Masters EX and Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist Of The Roses are specifically stated to be alternate universes with their own canons. And then there's the Pokemon TCG, with Card art that depicts Cynthia with Pokemon she's seen nowhere else with like Rayquaza.

There are a lot of depictions of these characters and a lot with different canons. So we'll be using context clues to decide what to use. In terms of Pokemon Masters EX, while it is its own canon separate from the Mainline series Games and Anime, it's generally the same characters with little changes. So, Masters EX will be taken into consideration.

But the Pokemon TCG will not be as the Trading Card Game is specifically its own canon completely, with little to no ties to the Mainline series as a whole. Duelist Of The Roses will also be excluded due to being a completely different story with little to no connection to the original Yu-Gi-Oh outside of monsters and character designs. I mean, Yugi is literally called “Henry Tudor”. Very different.

There have been many more incarnations of these characters and series, so I may miss something or include something that doesn't make sense. I’ll try to bring up everything near the end, but please don't expect absolute perfection from me. I am one person with way too much time.

Also, a classic question with Yu-Gi-Oh Characters in a Versus Setting is if their Monsters can be harmed by real creatures, considering they're cards. Pegasus has Two ways around this hurdle though. Due to his connections to Kaiba Corp, he could potentially have access to their Hologram Technology which is so futuristic that the Holograms they create are as Real as anything else. Or more simply, the Millennium Eye can start a Shadow Game, which will turn all of Pegasus’ monsters real. Now, with all that out of the way, Let's begin!

Background

Cynthia

(“Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, to. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. But that's enough talk. Let's get on with why you're here. As the Pokémon League Champion, I accept your challenge!”)

Since she was just a little girl with her Gible, Cynthia has been fascinated in both Pokemon and their History. Specifically, the history of her home region, Sinnoh. A region of Myths and Legends, dating back to the creation of the Pokemon Universe with Arceus and The Creation Trio of Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. Encouraged by her Grandmother, Cynthia not only became a World Wide Known Archeologists and Historian, but also the Sinnoh Pokemon League Champion!

Cynthia spends her free time exploring historical sites with ties to the Legendary Pokemon of Sinnoh, and has even traveled to other Regions like Unova and Alola to learn about their histories. Often referring to herself as “The Researcher Of Myths!”... Is now a good time to mention she's also a huge dork? Eventually, her studies would result in her running into conflict with the villainous team, Team Galactic, who had planned to reset the Universe in their own image. But The Protagonist, Lucas/Dawn, alongside Cynthia were able to confront them and save the timeline. All in a day's work for the Sinnoh League Champion.

Pegasus

("The world has taught me that only the strong and the ruthless survive. In memory of all I have lost, I fight on with all I possess, and I intend to win!”)

Born to a wealthy Casino Tycoon, Pegasus J. Crawford was a well off kid. One night, when Pegasus was 10 years old, he was attending one of his Father’s Parties in Las Vegas. That's where he would meet Cecelia, and it was love at first sight. They immediately hit it off, and as soon as their mid teens they were living together. And eventually, in their late teens, they even got married. A little young for such a commitment, but y’know. Sadly though, Tragedy struck when Cecelia passed away due to an illness at the age of 17. Pegasus, unable to accept this reality, scoweded the world for a way to revive the dead. An endeavor that would eventually lead him to Egypt.

Pegasus traveled to the Egyptian Tomb of ancient artifacts known as The Millennium Items, and despite warnings from a guardian named Shadi, Pegasus would enter the Tomb. Which would lead to him brutally obtaining the Millennium Eye. He also learned of The Shadow Games, which would inspire him to create the game known as Duel Monsters, after first establishing his own corporation known as Industrial Illusions. Duel Monsters became the biggest phenomenon in just 7 years, the world having changed to revolve around these cards. But even with his new found fame, he still searched for a way to revive his beloved. And he planned to take over Kaiba Corp to use their Hologram Technology alongside his New Found Magic to revive Cecelia.

Thus, Pegasus hosted the Duelist Kingdom to help cover up his nefarious plan. But it'd all come crumbling down when Yugi Muto eventually made it all the way, defeated him, and freed the souls of those he had captured as well as his plans coming to light. In some stories, this is the end of his story. But in others, he actually does change. He becomes a genuinely good person, though he was never really a bad guy. Having adopted and raised several orphans in his time. But now, he was doing his best to realize his mistakes and even helped Yugi Muto and hai friends save the world on occasion. Goes to show that even a corrupt man who has seemingly lost it all can still find something worth living for.

Experience & Skill

Cynthia

Cynthia has been a Pokemon Trainer since she was a young girl, and thus has alot of battle experience. As a Pokemon Champion as well, she is one of the best of the best within the Pokemon World. She's also incredibly intelligent, given her exploration and studies of Sinnoh and other Regions.

Cynthia even partook in the World Championship, where she battled against many of the greatest trainers in the Pokemon World, and the Champion Cup where she battled against fellow Champions.

Pegasus

For being a successful businessman, card game creator, and creator of his own Corporation… you may be shocked to hear that Pegasus is only 24 years old. He's a relatively young man for his achievements. Not only that, but he's incredibly smart and informed about the world. And as the creator of Duel Monsters, he's great at the game. Some may claim it's because of his cheating, but even after losing the Millennium Eye he could still hold his own against Duelists like Seto Kaiba.

Pegasus

Yu-Gi-Oh Characters and Duel Monsters

(Due to the crossover movie where Yugi, Jaden, and Yusei all met and dueled together they should all scale. So for Pegasus, we'll be looking at all the best feats from Duel Monsters, GX, and 5Ds. Nothing that came after that time will be used.)

Before The Verdict

Is Arceus Scaling Valid?

Can Cynthia actually scale to Arceus? Well, it's kinda complicated. Let's look at Pokemon Legends Arceus. Rei or Akari battle Arceus after completing the Pokedex. Cynthia’s ancestor, Volo, battles Rei and Akari using Giratina. Cynthia has Giratina. Simple scaling, right? Well, not quite. Completing the Pokedex is something that can only be done after the Volo fight, with multiple Legendaries being locked behind the post game Volo battle. It feels like this kinda represents a training arc of sorts. Rei or Akari battling and catching powerful legendary Pokemon, all leading up to the confrontation with Arceus. So it's likely that Rei and Akari, by the time they battle Arceus, are SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than Volo. And thus, they outclass Cynthia as well. While there are other arguments that can be made, most crumble to this same logic. Thus, Arceus Scaling simply isn't reliable.

Verdict

Stats

When looking at their own physical power, there's no real question. Sure, Cynthia would 100% win in a fist fight. But the Millennium Eye’s Power changes all of that. As the Millennium Items are similar in power to The Quantum Cube and The Plana, which have Low Multiversal levels of power. And considering Pegasus'... Laser Vision, Cynthia would be screwed in a person on person Battle.

But, that's not what the fight is about now. Is it? Let's Compare the Summons. Both have multiple summons that can fight and scale to Multiversal levels of power (Garchomp / Giratina and The Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon). As Giratina can block Palkia’s Spacial Rend and Giratina is a member of the Creation Trio. But Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon, and other similarly powerful monsters, can scale to Kaibe’s Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Of which could battle and take hits from Obelisk The Tormenter, one of the Egyptian Gods. Meaning their AP is pretty comparable overall.

Speed doesn't make things easier. With Cynthia having Infinite Arguments by scaling to Necrozma, and Pegasus having Immeasurable Arguments via scaling to Paradox and his Malefic Stardust Dragon… at the very least Cynthia's other Pokemon are more durable, via actually having Durability feats… besides the Toons that have Multiversal levels Durability. But for the most part, Cynthia and Pegasus pretty much perfectly tie in terms of stats (Damn Immeasurable and Infinite BS). Which means, we have to look other places for a result.

Arsenal & Abilities

Cynthia has a massive arsenal. With all the items, Sygna Suits, and access to Mega Evolution and Dynamax it seems like she should blow Pegasus out of the water as Pegasus has to set or reveal most of his Spell and Traps to use them while Cynthia can let all her items be secret… if it all wasn't for the Millennium Eye. This Artifact absolutely screws Cynthia as not only will Pegasus know the items on her Pokemon, but can also see what moves she's gonna use, when she's gonna use Potions and such, and when Cynthia will pull out her trump cards like Mega Evolution and The Sygna Suits. Essentially, Cynthia will be playing in the dark against a never before seen opponent while Pegasus will know everything going in.

Of course, the Millennium Eye isn't the only thing giving him an edge. Both the Masters EX Skills and Duel Links Skills will provide appropriate advantages throughout the fight, so it comes down to who will be able to overwhelm the other first. And Pegasus has that in spades. From Traps that can destroy monsters as soon as they enter the field, to Spells that can revive his own. Pegasus will almost always be in control, while Cynthia is forced to fight an uphill battle. And that's without even mentioning Toon World. With Toon World, Pegasus could transform Cynthia’s Pokemon into Toons that will fight for him. Granted, Cynthia could counter this with Giratina’s Reality Warping, but it's notable.

Then we get into the fact of their realms. The Distortion World and The Shadow Realm are pretty equivalent. If either Cynthia or Pegasus gets sent to these realms, they're basically screwed. Or so it seems, but Cynthia might have a way out of this. Giratina can open portals and travel dimensions, as well as having Cosmic Awareness, so it's possible that Giratina could save Cynthia from The Shadow Realm. While if Pegasus gets sent to The Distortion World, only way he's getting out is Divine Intervention… which he might actually have due to The Millennium Eye. Due to their connection to Shadi and The Egyptian Gods, Pegasus’ Millenium Eye might actually allow him to escape the Distortion World.

But does this all matter? For Pegasus, yeah. For Cynthia... No, not really. The Soul Cards are actually a more reliable wincon than the Shadow Realm. As Pegasus can Seal Cynthia's Soul away, as well as the souls of her Pokemon. With the exception of Giratina, but unlike with the Shadow Realm he'd have no real way to save them in this scenario due to a lack of Soil Hax. Cynthia does have ways around many of Pegasus' tricks, and she's smart enough to potentially even outsmart The Millennium Eye, but the Soul Cards are something she simply has no counter to. But enough waiting around. Let's get into the REAL fun stuff.

Pokemon VS Duel Monsters

How do Cynthia's Pokemon stack up to Pegasus’ Duel Monsters? Honestly, it's a hard question due to how different the mechanics are. But I'll do my best. I'm terms of power, stats, and feats most of Pegasus' normal monsters won't be doing much. He had multiple Effect Monsters that could prove useful, but most monsters like Dark Rabbit, Parrot Dragon, Rouge Doll and more are getting taken out by Garchomp and Lucario. But then we take a look at the Toon Monsters, and everything changes. Most of Cynthia’s Pokemon can't do much of anything to the Toon Monsters. By using Mega Evolution and Dynamax she can prolly keep up, but the Toon’s Physiology will make it incredibly difficult, if not impossible, for most of Cynthia's Pokemon to take down… except for one.

Giratina using Battlefield Removal and Reality Warping stands a much better chance against the Toons, and can actually kill them. The Toons are likely a similar level of power, via scaling to Blue-Eyes White Dragon who could fight Obelisk The Tormentor, but they're horrendously OutHaxed by the God of The Distortion World. So, does Pegasus have a way around Giratina? Several actually. Millennium-Eyes Restrict can absorb enemies to make itself stronger. So if it absorbs Giratina, suddenly Pegasus has his own Giratina. Not 100% convinced that would work? Due to the Millennium Eye’s Divine Power, he could potentially just use that the send Giratina back to the Distortion World. And if Cynthia gets trapped by the Soul Cards, it's possible that Giratina just leaves as it has no purpose here anymore without Cynthia. There's many ways for Pegasus to get around Giratina. He'll struggle with them, especially considering Millennium-Eyes Restrict is much harder to get onto the battlefield than any of Cynthia’s Pokemon, but Pegasus has what he needs to outdo Cynthia’s strongest option.

Conclusion

Cynthia

Advantages

  • Physically Stronger

  • Her Pokemon Outdo 80% of Pegasus’s Monsters

  • Giratina outdoes almost all of Pegasus' Monsters

  • Has Ways to Escape the Shadow Realm

  • Masters EX Skills and Sygna Suits allow control over certain aspects of the Battle

Equal

  • Similar Speed

  • Similar Levels of Experience and Skill

  • Summons shared a Similar Level of Power

Disadvantages

  • Has no way around The Millennium Eye

  • Not as many useful Hax and Arsenal

  • Less Durable Summons

  • Doesn't have many answers to Pegasus' Stronger Summons like The Toons

  • The Distortion World isn't a reliable Wincon

  • No Resistance to Soul Manipulation

Pegasus

Advantages

  • More Useful Hax and Arsenal in the Long Run

  • The Millennium Eye allows him to take away any strategic play on Cynthia’s part

  • More Durable Summons

  • Duel Links Skills allow allow control over Certain Aspects of The Battle

  • The Toon Monsters and Millennium-Eyes Restrict outdo most of Cynthia’s Summons except Giratina

  • Has Ways to Escape The Distortion World

  • Has Ways to take down or match Giratina

Equal

  • Similar Speed

  • Similar Levels of Experience and Skill

  • Summons shared a Similar Level of Power

Disadvantages

  • Physically Weaker

  • Most of his Monsters are outdone by All of Cynthia's Pokemon

  • Has to Set or Reveal his Spells and Traps before activating them

  • Giratina is stronger than almost all of his Summons

With everything covered, I believe Pegasus takes this fight. They're pretty even in terms of Stats, but Pegasus has alot of of Abilities and Arsenal that Cynthia doesn't have a counter to, like Soul Sealing. While Pegasus has a counter to most of Cynthia's own Wincons. Giratina will be tough and will put Pegasus on the back foot for a large portion of the fight, but he has ways to take down Giratina with Millennium-Eyes Restrict and The Millennium Eye. Cynthia will NOT go down easy, but Pegasus takes this fight more times than not I feel. What can I say? Pegasus has a real EYE for Victory, and left Cynthia Distorted.

The Winner is… Maximillion Pegasus!
